A Wedding I Didn’t Know I’d Be Revisiting
A few years ago, I photographed a wedding in Colorado for a couple who had both lost their spouses.
Life, however, apparently wasn’t finished writing their story.
They found each other, fell in love, and decided to get married. It was a beautiful winter wedding in Colorado — fireplaces, mountain views, a gorgeous bride, and just enough snow on the ground to remind this Tennessee photographer that Colorado and December can be a slippery combination.
Like every wedding I photograph, when it was over I packed up my cameras, edited the photographs, delivered their gallery and moved on to the next adventure.
A Familiar Call
A couple of years passed, and then I got a call about another wedding in Colorado.
That’s not terribly unusual. I travel for weddings, and I’m always happy for an excuse to point my cameras toward the mountains.
But this one was a little different.
The couple who had hired me for that winter wedding a few years earlier had recommended me.
Their daughter was getting married.
And just like that, I wasn’t simply heading back to Colorado. I was going back to photograph another chapter of the same family’s story.
Back to a Familiar Place
When I arrived for the wedding, even the location was familiar.
Her wedding was being held at the same church where I’d photographed her dad’s wedding just a few years earlier.
Same family. Same church. Same photographer.
But this time, a completely new set of memories was about to be made.
More Than One Day
One of my favorite things about being a photographer is getting to become part of preserving a family’s memories — not just once, but over and over again.
Sometimes it starts with a proposal. Then comes the wedding. A maternity session. A newborn. A first birthday cake smash. Family portraits as the kids grow up.
And every once in a while, enough years pass that I find myself photographing the next generation.
That’s what made this wedding special.
A few years earlier, I had photographed her dad starting a new chapter of his life. Now I was standing in the same church, cameras in hand, photographing his daughter as she started hers.
Same family. Same photographer. Two completely different chapters.
